Echoes and Expressions

Echoes and expressions celebrates the unique voices of artists of the Macleay Valley. These are their stories, their perspectives, and creative vision. Through a wide range of styles, subjects, and mediums, the exhibition hopes to create conversation and invite viewers to discover the echoes of shared human experience through individual expression.

Fred Bullen has won awards for his works in local area exhibitions and many are currently displayed in galleries in Forster, Taree and Port Macquarie.

His most recent works have been described as having been executed “by an artist who has developed his own style based on an intuitive execution. The suburban landscape is rendered with an almost photographic naturalism; but the use of bright colours, ambiguous and distorted perspectives, and strange juxtapositions suggest an imagined or dreamed reality”.

His inspiration comes from the local area and the urban landscape which are then reproduced in traditional or one of many styles such as ‘abstract realism’.

Vivian is a Hybrid artist who experiments with all types of techniques in both traditional and new media.

Trained as a graphic designer, her work incorporates a mixture of watercolour, acrylics, inks, pen, gelli plate and eco printing often mixed with original photography and/or digital paintings and composites to create rich and unique textures. Once finished she uses Archival papers and pigment inks to create Fine Art, Giclee Prints.

Peggy has had a lifetime interest in art but raising a family and a demanding career meant her art practice was put on hold. Instead, she turned her hand to photography.

After retiring, when looking through the camera lens, she felt the need to paint and draw what she saw.

Having lived in rural areas for most of her life and travelling to remote areas of Australia, Peggy has developed a kinship with the Australian landscape and its native flora and fauna. This kinship is the basis of her art. The beauty of the Australian landscapes and its wildlife and wildflowers provides the artist with unlimited subject matter.

Over time she has explored various mediums and techniques to recreate the mood and beauty of her subjects.

Most recently Peggy has been enjoying working with ink pens to create floral still life drawings.

The artist lives and works in Laurieton.

STEPPING OUT

This exhibition is about facing my fear and taking a leap of faith to put my self and my creations out into the world. It's not about waiting until I'm good enough, waiting for the right time or the right content it's about doing it now even though it's outside my comfort zone.

Gwen Bullock Art

Influences from Greenland, Central Europe, Outback Australia and South West Rocks have intensified Gwen's love of art and painting since 2012. Gwen works mostly with acrylics and soft pastels. She creates artworks from her own photography using her freehand skills.

Gwen's artwork is realistic/representations with impressionistic insights. Through loving to tell a story, she keeps her artwork alive and honest.

Experience with a wide range of themes from icescapes, landscapes, seascapes to human and animal portraits (and many more), have resulted from Gwen tutoring workshops for 11 years.
Gwen has won awards at art shows and successfully sells her artwork.

The Gallery's annual Sculpture Prize will be held again in December this year. It will be exhibited inside the Gallery and in the grounds of the Gallery and Maritime Precinct.

The heritage listed Maritime Precinct in South West Rocks includes the Gallery, which is housed in the Pilot House; the Maritime Museum; Visitor Information Centre; and the Arts & Crafts Cottage.

The Sculpture Prize 'Sculptures Rock!' will run for three weeks from Monday 14th December 2026 to Sunday 3th January 2027 in conjunction with the Gallery’s Summer Members’ Exhibition.

With a large prize pool, this is a fabulous opportunity to exhibit in one of the most beautiful locations on the Mid North Coast.

Each sculpture requires payment of a $25 entry fee. Youth (under-18) entries are free.

Large Outdoor prize (larger than 80cm in any direction)
Large Outdoor Highly Commended
Small Prize (no larger than 80cm in any direction)

All prizes are non-acquisitive.

Adelaide Swift Memorial Art Awards Registration (14 Jun 2027)

Artists are invited to participate in this prestigious competition.
Artworks will be accepted for the following categories:

Main Prize: $3000 - The Adelaide Swift—South West Rocks Rotary Club Award
All other categories have monetary awards, you can see the list here.

Deadline for registration is April 1st.

Deliver your artwork to the gallery between 3pm and 5pm on Sunday, April 13.
Size limit: Maximum 1 metre on any side. Limit of two artworks per category.

The artworks will be on display at The Gallery from April 14 to May 4.
