Liesel Arden’s work explores concepts of spirituality, place and identity through the study of natural elements and their relationships within an environment.
In 2021 the artist embarked with her young family on a pilgrimage to live and work in The Kimberley region of Australia. She found this time to be transformative, in her practice and in her sense of self.
The artist and her family immersed themselves in the culture and community in a day to day world of the desert. Many of her recent works were painted ‘en plein air’ amongst the deserts, waterholes and gorges of Central and Northern Australia.
These intimate and emotive landscapes and abstractions document a reconnecting to the land and with it a reconnecting to ‘self’. The works vividly express the desert as both an Australian motif, a reconnection to culture and a place of spiritual connection.
